One of my husband’s favorite candy bars are the Turtles. I’ve been buying him a pack when I get groceries, and I thought I might try to bake them myself. They were not difficult to make at all, and you only need three main ingredients: caramels, pecans, and chocolate chips.
Although the store bought turtles are dipped in milk chocolate, I only had semi-sweet chocolate on hand. This made for a richer taste that dark chocolate lovers are apt to like. (My husband’s comment was that they were tasty but he would have preferred milk chocolate).
The pecans tossed in butter;
Use 1 Tablespoon of butter per 1 cup of nuts.
To toast the pecans, layer them out on a paper plate.
Microwave 1 minute, stir, and microwave 1 more minute.

Before putting in the oven, make a “Y” shape with the pecans.
Top with a caramel.
Only heat in the oven for a few minutes or the caramels will get crunchy.
Use your fingers to gently mold the caramel around the pecans so they stick together.

Total time
Serves: 30
  • 1&1/2 cups pecan halves (about 90)
  • 1&1/2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 bag caramels (about 30)
  • 1 bag chocolate chips
  • 1 Tablespoon shortening
  1. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Toss the pecans in the butter and lay out on a large paper plate. Microwave 1 minute. Stir. Microwave 1 more minute. Let cool.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange 3 pecan halves in the shape of a "Y." Place a caramel on top. Repeat with remaining pecan halves and caramels.
  3. In a 350 degree oven, place the turtles. Bake for 2 minutes, just long enough for the caramels to soften. Carefully mold caramels with your fingers to cover all three pecans so they stay together. If the caramel starts to harden, place back in the oven for 1 more minute to soften.
  4. Place baking sheet with turtles in refrigerator. Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips and shortening over low heat and stir until smooth.
  5. Using a fork, dip each turtle into the chocolate, shaking off any excess. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet and continue with rest of turtles. Let harden for about 20-30 minutes before enjoying.
